   I bought this to replace another Lorex DVR ( this would be my third- they seem to work fantastic for about 2 years before something or another stops working). This by far has been the simplest to set up and not having to deal with "port forwarding" and changing other modem settings is a huge plus. The lorex app also works well on both the iPad and iPhone with iOS8. There is sometimes a small delay (5-10 seconds) for the app to connect to the DVR, but thus far it has done so without any issues. The unit itself is silent and has functioned 24/7 without issues for the last 2 months (duration of time that I've had it).

   I have had two Lorex DVRs fail. My first DVR failed after 3 months. The internal power supply failed and would not power up. I opened a service ticket with Lorex and had to call beck three times before they would ship me a new unit. Now my replacement unit failed after 15 months with the exact same problem. Both these DVR's where on a UPS backup with a line conditioner. I opened another service ticket and it took three calls again to get an answer that my unit is out of warranty and they can only offer a discount price any only a 3 month warranty. No thanks I will never buy a Lorex product again.

   Outstanding unit so far, much better user interface than previous models, small footprint, and excellent setup options make this one a solid contender. I cannot review this from a longevity standpoint as I just set the unit up replacing an older, failed Dahua 16 ch. unit. Using a few different resolution cameras including my older 540 TVL, and the newer 700 TVL I really DID notice an improvement in image quality with the older cameras just by replacing my ancient DVR with this model. My previous unit was more focused on commercial and many of the setup options catered to that market more than a residential unit. This one is solidly placed in the residential market, and the ease of setup, programming, scheduling is very evident. Have not connected it for offsite viewing yet using the new "Stratus" setup, but will report back after getting to that. I have not opened the unit up yet, but on Lorex's website they mention Seagate warranties so I assume the 100% duty cycle hard drive is a Seagate. Nothing lasts forever, but using the right components will drastically reduce problems and down time, and time will tell on this unit. Obviously a site where there are 8 cameras recording 24/7 will inflict more wear and tear on the HD than another site wherein maybe 2-3 cameras are used on schedules, or motion activation.

   There MUST be at least ONE drawback right ?? Well there is, but it's minor. The ultra bright RED hard drive activity/status light on the unit is VERY bright, and although the constant lit (normal status) might be do-able in a living space, the blinking red (recording) can be a bit much. A very nice feature would be the ability to DIM or turn OFF if needed. Overall very impressed on initial setup, program, and use for the first few days.
