    DIYer's delight!!!, April 22, 2015

I got the "four" camera version of this Lorex product (LW491HD). With all due respect to the other less favorable reviewers here, I am very satisfied with my system. It is relatively simple to install, works exactly as advertised, and based on that, it met all my expectations. It's not 100% perfect. Nor is any other DIY home surveillance system. But at this price, it still provides plenty of bang for the buck.

I like that it can be used with just its 9" color monitor (which looks like a tablet computer) that comes with a rechargeable, built-in battery, so it is "semi" portable; handy for setting up the most favorable vantage point for each camera. But, for remote monitoring via the available apps, it needs to be connected to the Internet, either directly to any available Ethernet router port, or via a WiFi range extender, or a pair of power line devices. It comes with a honestly small CAT5 Ethernet cable, but the other two alternatives provide much more flexibility. One minor criticism I have of the show unit is that in a quad view (with the buy of two extras cameras) there is no bordering around each image. I reckon that would be helpful in order to differentiate each picture a small better. But, in the sequence (continuous scan) full picture mode, this is not an issue.

For testing purposes, I had the system up and running on my dining room table in less than an hour. To properly position each camera at key vantage points, a small pre-plotting goes a long ways. First and foremost, each camera requires an AC power outlet within ~10' of its mounting location. Outdoors, this is a major dependency of the system as there generally are not nearly enough AC outlets around the perimeter of a typical residence. For example, to mount a camera just outside the front door entrance to my home, under the eaves just below the roofline of my house, I had to splice into the front porch light's AC power source. Fortunately, I was an Electrician in another life, so this was not a major obstacle. The point is, there was no other way to get AC power to the camera at that particular (and highly desirable) location. The same for just about anywhere else around the outside of the house.

In conjunction with that front porch location, one of the really nice features of this system, is its two way intercom capability. The intercom mode works locally using the 9" show's built in mic and speaker (with volume control) using talk and listen "soft touch" buttons. At first, I though remote monitoring supports video on mobile devices, but it does, in fact, support audio too at least on the iPhone app. Sufficient bandwidth is a MUST in order to enable and see the speaker and microphone icons during a "live view". Motion motion detection alerts messages are supported on mobile devices as well, while the local show merely "beeps" to alert whenever the cameras are enabled to detect motion.

The mobile apps are what makes this system shine. Android and iOS mobile devices are supported. Unfortunately, there is no support for web browsers on a PC or MAC. But, to my surprise, I am able to use both an Android tablet and my iPhone 5S to view each camera's image in 1280x720p resolution. Again, sufficient bandwidth is essential to do this. The included show unit's highest resolution is 800x640. In either case, daytime camera images are generally quite clear and colorful. Of course, the same images at night become quite grainy in black and white only, in a darkened room, or at night with minimal lighting. Night viewing is mainly to detect motion using the infrared camera lenses which glow red from multi LEDs. For this reason, it would be wise to mount outdoor cameras high up under the eaves of a roof, so as not to be as easily seen by would be intruders.

Bottom line, this is an all-in-one, high quality system that works very well, with a lot of extra value for the cost, and certainly within the capabilities of most do-it-your-selfers! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Very simple install, simple setup, fine picture, not to be used near other 2.4ghz devices., January 14, 2015

This review is from: Lorex LW2962H 4 channel surveillance system with 2 wireless HD cameras and rechargeable LCD (Electronics)
This system was one of the simplest surveillance system installs, and I've installed quite a few.

    Pro's:
    Simple to install
Quick to connect to the internet w/ no monthly fee's
    Excellent quality video
Portable use (while not connected to the internet)
Android app alerts to motion detect.
Simple to view motion events via your phone.
Fantastic microphones, with slightly delay and intercom
Very simple menu options and controls
In VGA recording mode it can hold days of video with a 64gb card

    Con's:
2.4ghz wireless devices can cause interference and poor camera use distance
Portable tablet has to be plugged into your router to be viewed online making it not so portable.
Tablet seems somewhat cheap, but it does what it is supposed to.
Distances quoted by Lorex are for flat unobstructed land/building, probably fantastic in a empty warehouse or flat prairie land.
8GB card is ridiculously too small, and 64gb for max microsd card is disappointing now that 128gb cards are very avalible
Android app is still in its infancy, so it's not perfect but it does work.
Motion fields of video cannot be designated, just sensitivity.
No Windows support, it would be nice to be able to view on windows computers connected to the same network.
Zoom does not really zoom the camera, just the picture on the screen
    -------
Although I list many con's, that doesn't diminish the value/ease of this system, my non-tech-savy mother is the main user of this device/system. She likes it. I was disappointed that now some of the 2.4ghz devices have to be unplugged to make this system work correctly. This is used in a large newer triple wide modular home with cameras at all four corners(we got the 2964), they can be seen from every part of the house, and even was able to pick up the signal when the device was placed in the window of the nearby metal garage. I reckon with how simple this was to set up, my mother probably could have done it herself, yes that simple!

My experience with this system is not particularly excellent. The image is acceptable, but, there is no way to define the area for motion detection within the software. This causes the camera to record even if the wind blows the leaves on the trees. I don't know about you, but I do not have time to check virtually all the video this system is likely to capture. If the wind is blowing and there are leaf bearing trees in the image, it will record continually. The high, medium, and low motion sensitivity settings do not address this problem. I returned it.
