   I bought this to replace my Swann DVR that died on my after only 18 months. My Swann was very hard to set up for watching the feed online away from the system. The set up on the Lorex was a piece of cake. Just scanned the QR code into the Lorex app on my phone. I have it set up on my iPad, Android Galaxy and my wife's cell phone. It was very quick to set up and replace my inferior Swann DVR. One reason I will not give any Security DVR a 5 star review is the manufacturers need to come out of their cave an allow downloads of the video in quicktime files. Also I wish that this 4 channel system came with a 1 TB storage option.

   This is the third LH030045G I have bought in the last 2 years. All have been distress free. I must profess I don't use all the features, but the remote access is very reliable and sets up in minutes out of the box. Using the Lorex software client for PC enables honestly excellent resolution from a pc, but the Lorex ECO Stratus smartphone app for android is a real convenience to see your cameras on the go. Both software apps work flawlessly. For direct viewing of the camera feed locally with excellent quality LCD monitors the resolution is brilliant. Working the camera controls via remote access can be slow, but usable. Another fantastic feature is the ability to record remotely. If you are networking saavy, you can change the default ports the cameras listen on, so if you are accessing the camera using a single public ip address, you can port-forward to multiple DVR units. For the less technically saavy, Lorex has cloud access or you can simply use the camera device ID to access with the remote software, and the instructions are simple to follow with color pictures. I have bought cheaper DVR units for under $100.00, and you get what you pay for. They lack hard drives for recording, and the remote access is usually poor- often the apps don't work well on smartphones, and plugins are needed for browser viewing remotely. These plugins don't work well with firefox or chrome, so if you are using non-windows operating systems you will have difficulty viewing the cameras remotely. With Lorex this worry is gone. All in all, you can't beat this for the money. Lorex has other models, albeit more costly, but they support from 8-16 cameras. The only negative about Lorex is their poor support. You can be on hold for a long time and get disconnected often. It's not worth the effort to contact them, unless you need to return the item. Usually you can find the answer online to most of your setup/connection issues rather than dealing with their support.

   We were replacing another 4 camera system. We wanted cheap, simple, and excellent app support. I'm glad we went with the Lorex because it was super simple! As long as you have a coax based system with four cameras or less, this will work fantastic.

   This is the system with a 500GB hard drive installed. It includes HDMI, power, network cable, and instructions. It doesn't come with a monitor, any cameras, or any camera cables. Like most camera systems, it doesn't have power for the cameras. It's expected that you have another power source for the cameras (there are only coax plugs for the cameras). The lorex 4 camera systems that come with the cameras also include a 4-way camera power adapter that is not included here (but there is a power adapter for the system).

   I like that you have a lot of options. You don't need to plug it into the internet, you can just plug in a monitor. There are three options for how to connect a monitor: coax plug for an ancient-school security moniotor, a vga out, and an HDMI port. On the flip side, you don't need a monitor if you're only going to watch on computers, phones, or ipads. Of course you can use both.

   There are also a lot of options for recording, motion detection, and all that stuff. You can set to record certain cameras only on certains days or time of day. You can set it up to email you a picture when certain cameras detect motion. Officially it can be set to detect only motion for just an area of the picture, but I never find that works well on cheap systems. Me, I just have 2 of the cameras record 24/7 and 2 of the cameras only record after hours. I do it that way so I have the longest record time on the included 500gb hard drive. It just overwrites ancient when the hard drive fills up.

   I reckon that's the only down side. It would keep the recordings longer if the hard drive were larger. You can certainly replace the hard drive with something larger later, and you can reduce the video recording quality or reduce the amount of time it records. But I would have liked a 1TB hard drive.

   When we set up I set it for a static ip address. Then we downloaded the app on an iphone and an android phone. Using the app, we took a picture of the QR code. Then it just worked on the phones. I'm not sure if I had to set it to a static ip or not, but I find the static ip makes it simpler to view the cameras from an internet explorer window. There are some installs that can be more complicated--some routers may need settings changed for it to work outside the office. But overall, it just worked!

   I didn't used to like Lorex systems. They often pair crappy cameras with ok recorders. But I've come to appreciate how simple they make their systems and that they update their apps more than other companies. I already had the cameras installed, but I got this whole recorder set up, recording, and apps set up in less than 30 minutes! I'm a computer tech but it really was simple.
